Gastronomia
A lot of our experience with Sicilian culture so far has been with the food. Even on base, in what would be considered a typical American food court, there’s a strong Sicilian representation. The Galley, which is called Ristorante Bella Italia, is run by Sicilians.
Getting the pasta or fish and a salad is the way to go because it’s made with extra love. We made the mistake of going when they served Chinese food and it was terrible. Other than that you can’t beat the Galley for lunch.
Prego is where it's at!
This was a lunch we picked up at the food court. They have Taco Bell and KFC (eww) but Prego is where it’s at (and where all the Sicilians eat). Everything is fresh and cheap and you get a balanced meal. The place next to it serves Sicilian style pizzas which are awesome. Woodfired, thin crust, simple ingredients.
I borrowed a Sicilian cookbook from the library here and made my first dish a couple days ago. It’s called Caponata and it’s a cold eggplant ’salad’ usually served as an appetizer. It turned out alright, though I forgot Dustin doesn’t really like eggplant all that much. Hopefully I will have honed my skills a bit before we start having visitors. As it stands I’m definitely not a good cook.
I’ll try to keep a log of some of the more interesting things we consume here. Up next: Limoncello.

Are we stealing the Buffalo Bills catch phrase?

King of the 4 time losers! Buffalo’s catch phrase according to me and Dan who is the only person I know that has stuck by Buffalo. I’m going to see Dan this weekend. I’m really looking forward to watching the conference championships with him!

Gah, eggplant. A little late to the party but I had to voice my distaste.

I guess I’m in the right country, eggplant is one of my favorite vegetables.
